Dear Members,

The Guild has prepared a report on feature and television writer employment by ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, and disability status. The analysis includes both WGA West and WGA East statistics for television writers employed on series released in the 2023-2024 season and feature writers employed in 2024, and compared with employment in 2020. These figures cover a period including a strike-shortened television season and a difficult industry contraction, with fewer writers employed in all work areas.

Some of the demographic trends documented in the report include:

  • 52.5% of TV series writers in the 23-24 season were men and 45.0% were women; 45.4% were white and 40.4% were BIPOC. Compared with the 2020-21 season, this represents an increase in series writers who are BIPOC—particularly mid-level BIPOC women and lower level BIPOC men—and decreases in series writers who are white women and white men.
  • 66.4% of screenwriters in 2024 were men and 32.6% were women; 63.6% of screenwriters were white and 18.9% were BIPOC. These statistics represent minimal change since 2020.
  • BIPOC women accounted for 21.2% of new members in 2024, and BIPOC men represented 20.5%. White women represented 19.2% of new members in 2024, and white men represented 25.5%.

As writers across all demographics experience the pain of the industry contraction, the Guild is committed to offering support, community, and resources.
