Members
The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) recognizes that its members may face a range of personal and professional challenges during their careers. To support members during these times, the WGAW Financial Bridge Loan Program (formerly known as Good and Welfare Loans) provides short-term loans to eligible members, helping them navigate financial hardship and maintain their well-being.
The Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF)—a 105-year-old charity that serves as a vital safety net for working and retired members of the entertainment industry—administers the WGAW Financial Bridge Loan Program for the WGAW subject to the oversight of the WGAW Membership and Finance Committee.
Application Process for WGAW Financial Bridge Loans
- To begin the application process, WGAW Current, Post-Current, or Lifetime members contact MPTF’s Community Social Service Department at (323) 634-3888 and leave a voicemail message. All inquiries are returned within one business day.
- An MPTF social worker connects with the applicant to complete an intake form and provide information about the program. During this conversation, the social worker may provide referrals to additional resources based on the applicant’s needs. Applicants are also asked to sign a release of information, which allows WGAW to verify key eligibility details such as earnings, membership status, dues balance, and any outstanding loan obligations.
- After eligibility information is verified and reviewed, the social worker informs the applicant of their eligibility status. If the applicant is not eligible, they are notified and may receive referrals to other supportive services. If the applicant meets the eligibility requirements for a loan, the process continues with a more detailed financial assessment.
- Eligible applicants work with the social worker to complete a comprehensive review of their financial situation. This includes an evaluation of financial health, employment history, current circumstances, and a household budget. Applicants must also provide documentation to support their request. The assessment may be conducted by phone, virtually, or in person, depending on what works best for the applicant.
- Following the assessment, the social worker prepares a recommendation to the WGAW Membership and Finance Committee (MFC) based on the applicant’s needs. The MFC reviews the recommendation and decides whether to approve the loan.
- Applicants have the right to appeal an adverse decision. To do so, the applicant must submit a written request to the MPTF Manager of Community Social Services explaining why the decision should be reconsidered. The MFC reviews the appeal, along with the original assessment and supporting documentation. The decision of the MFC regarding the appeal is final.
